Camouflage has always been a utilized weapon. From lions hiding
in the tall grass of Africa, to USMC snipers vegetating their ghillie
suits. Motion naturally attracts the eye, so lions learned to move slowly,
or not at all when stocking prey. Then, when the time is right, they strike.
Modern snipers generally spend most of the time on their belly crawling.
In fact, most of the military-constructed ghillies are left with the front
exposed. Mostly because they spend most of their time prone and the front
would drag and get caught on everything on the ground. But the elbows,
chest, and knees need to be padded with extra canvas or other material.
The sniper uses three basic moving methods. The least preferred is the
High Crawl. This crawling method is when you need to move fast, but still
want to be relatively concealed. Then there is the safest most preferred
method of crawling. It's called the Sniper Low Crawl. You are almost guaranteed
to remain undetected using this, but it is the most time-consuming method
of crawling. In between the two is the regular Low Crawl, which is a good
balance between remaining unseen, and speed. And the most efficient way
of crawling for sure.
One thing I mentioned earlier is "vegetating" a ghillie suit.
This is a very effective camouflage technique. So effective, the US Marine
Corps teaches it. Essentially, the sniper takes vegetation (leaves, grass,
moss) from the surrounding area he is stalking in, and weaves it in and
out of his ghillie suit. He "vegetates" his ghillie. This way,
he becomes the brush, making him nearly impossible to spot. This is one
of the most important techniques to learn about camouflage. If you fail
to learn this, you will fail to remain invisible.
I find a lot of people asking me, "Why are a lot of ghillie suits
left uncovered in the front?" Well, snipers spend the majority of
their time crawling around on their bellies anyway. And if they need to
run, either there's no one around, or they've been spotted, eliminating
the need for camouflage. But it is nice to know if you need to stand for
whatever reason that you'll still be relatively concealed. And this is
why most of the ghillie suits I make are covered with burlap. Head, chest,
back. Everything. And you can find these ghillie suits at the homepage,
or you can make your own. And I've written a complete guide on how to
do this and you can find that by clicking here.
